ROCKFORD — Attorneys for the city and a local bar that had its liquor license suspended last week because of a shooting met with Mayor Larry Morrissey this morning to talk about the bar’s future.
The parties met Thursday and agreed to reconvene this morning to continue the liquor commission hearing. They were discussing options to increase safety and curb violence that appears to be emanating from the bar.
Attorney Karl Winkler, representing JT’s Bourbon Street Grille, argued to get the suspension lifted last week, but the suspension remained in effect the full seven days.
The city is arguing that the bar is having a detrimental effect on the surrounding neighborhood. Parking lots near the bar have been the site of two shootings in the past six months. Police say both incidents started as fights inside the bar that continued outside.
Five people were shot there June 30. All suffered nonlife-threatening injuries.
This is the second time in six months that the city has suspended the bar’s liquor license. The other time was after a Jan. 27 shooting.
City Legal Director Patrick Hayes said he expected a decision on the case today.
