Xtreme Dance Force of Naperville, including Rockford native Robert Lewis, 19, was cut on July 3’s episode of “Randy Jackson Presents: America’s Best Dance Crew” on MTV.
The seven-member hip-hop team had made it through two rounds of competition before falling into the bottom two based on audience voting last week. They were then eliminated by judges after their dance performance on the show.
“We always expect the worst and hope for the best, so we were prepared for (the elimination), but it was still disappointing,” Lewis told the Register Star Tuesday via e-mail.
Xtreme Dance Force (xtremedanceforce.com) was one of 10 crews selected for the show. The group practices in a Naperville studio, and others in the group live in the Chicago area.
Lewis attended Auburn High School in Rockford and teaches hip-hop at Forest Hills Dance Academy in Loves Park. His parents, Laureen Bunting and Thomas Lewis, live in Rockford. His sister, Kristina Lewis of Rockford, teaches jazz and ballet at Forest Hills Dance Academy.
Lewis said his experience on the show will help his local students.
“I learned a lot about how shows like this are made and how much hard work that goes in behind the scenes,” he said. “I learned a lot about dance and what looks good on stage, a lot of ideas that I plan on using when I get home to my kids/fellow dancers at Forest Hills Dance Company.
“To everyone back at home, thank you so much for all your support, special thanks to everyone from Forest Hills Dance Company and to all my family — thank you, I love you, and I’ll be home soon.”
But maybe not too soon.
“I actually took a bus from L.A. to Las Vegas to support the rest of the Xtreme company while we are at a dance competition. Xtreme will be competing and training great dancers for a long time. As for myself, I want to teach more students at home and maybe start on some dance conventions.
So, how does Lewis like his newfound fame?: “Haha. I don’t think I’m famous, at least not yet.”
