Foolblue - Preserving the History of the Rockford Hip Hop Scene

One of the problems with the way a cultural revolution happens is that everyone is so busy creating the scene that no one bothers to keep a record of it. Well, a new Rockford organization is trying to change all that when it comes to the local hip hop scene. That organization goes by the name “Foolblue” and was started by DJ Maclin. Maclin says that the name, “Foolblue means no one really understands hip hop, which is similar to the meaning of the superstar hip hop group N.E.R.D. (No One Ever Really Dies). The “fool” part is for the lack of understanding, and the “blue” part is for the unity of learning from each other.”
For those who are unaware, Rockford has a vital and thriving hip hop scene – just look back at the Beet Café CD reviews and music features over the last couple years and you’ll find some definite indications of this. Maclin says that, “The hip hop culture has always had a problem of documenting and scrapbooking itself, and Rockford is no exception to this case.” That means that while documenting current events is not all that difficult, catching up on the past can represent more of a problem. It’s a problem that Maclin and company are not afraid to tackle.
Foolblue was born on March 1oth of this year and is represented by the website foolblue.com. Since starting this organization he’s been able to put together quite a collection of old footage, flyers, news articles, albums and pictures that are related to the Rockford hip hop scene. The website itself hosts current hip hop related events (even when they are only loosely related to hip hop) in art, music, clothing, politics and life – and virtually any other avenue you can imagine that has any connection to hip hop.
The group is interested in becoming deeply involved with the Rockford music scene and all its permutations. They also plan to put together hip hop movie nights, DVD’s, books and educational classes. They are looking to hold their own Rockford area Hip Hop Congress. Maclin says, “The main goal is to educate instead of just throwing parties, so we can enhance the mind with new experiences and valuable teachings.”
Others besides Maclin who have contributed to the project include Covert Empire, Victor Rivera and Midwest Monsters Kru, DJ Bizeone, Forest City Lumberjacks, Problem Addict, and MASS. For more information (including how you can get involved) stop by their website and get in touch. It’s a great way to be a part of preserving a segment of Rockford’s modern cultural heritage.
