Xtreme Dance Force of Naperville, including Rockford native Robert Lewis, 19, made the cut on Thursday’s second-season premiere of MTV’s “Randy Jackson Presents: America’s Best Dance Crew.”
The seven-member hip-hop team — dressed in gray vests, white collared shirts, dark gray trousers and white sneakers — was in the top five out of the 10 competing teams based on viewer votes.
However, Xtreme Dance Force performed on Thursday’s show to mixed reviews from the judges. Rapper Lil Mama applauded the group for taking risks and singled out Lewis for making a clean backflip and getting right back into his intricate routine.
Choreographer Shane Sparks called the routine “wack” and said “I have a 10-year-old who could have choreographed that.” JC Chasez of boy band ‘NSync thought the dancing was stiff.
In June 7’s audition show, Xtreme Dance Force was lauded by all three judges. Lil Mama said, “Looks like it took a bunch of white boys to come bring it.”
“America’s Best Dance Crew airs at 9 p.m. Thursdays on MTV (Comcast 33). More information is at dancecrew.mtv.com.
Lewis attended Auburn High School in Rockford and teaches hip-hop at Forest Hills Dance Academy in Loves Park. He told the Register Star June 10 that Xtreme Dance Force’s style sets it apart from other crews: “We’re going for the whole boy-band look. We want to let everybody know that you don’t have to be from the streets to do hip-hop. You don’t have to wear baggy clothes.”
He describes his dance team’s actions this way: “We have sharp movements, and we are more about big movements. We like to hit the beat as hard as we can.”
Lewis’ parents, Laureen Bunting and Thomas Lewis, live in Rockford. His sister, Kristina Lewis of Rockford, teaches jazz and ballet at Forest Hills Dance Academy.
